Pat’s Pilliga Tag-a-long September Tour

Armidale Branch NPA invites you to join Pat Schultz on a tag-a-long tour of the culturally and ecologically significant Pilliga Forest from Friday 17 to Monday 20 September 2021. The proposed program is flexible and depends on numbers attending and weather conditions.

Thursday 16th September – If time permits it is most enjoyable to have a day at the Pilliga Hot Bore Baths prior to the tour.

Friday 17th September – Arrive at Pilliga village on Friday to camp and relax at Pilliga hot bore baths ($5) or stay in basic accommodation at a B&B and have dinner at the Pilliga Cafe.

Saturday 18th September – Leave at 8.30am to visit Yarrie Lake at risk from coal seam gas development. Drive through Pilliga forest to the Salt Cave and the Fire Tower for expansive views across the forest to the Warrumbungle and Nandewar ranges. If time permits visit Gamaraay Sculpture Walk and possibly the Sandstone Caves. Stay at Barkala Homestay (Pilliga Pottery) either camping or share a room in unique accommodation and dine in the Blue Wren cafe.

Sunday 19th September – Leave at 8.30am to tour Santos coal seam gas fields and infrastructure, accompanied by a local Pilliga resident who will share their love and knowledge of Pilliga biodiversity. They will provide an update on the controversial Narrabri Gas Project impacting on the forest and surrounding farmlands, and its serious risks to the Great Artesian Basin. For those with commitments the tour ends here to allow travel time home in the afternoon. For those staying the accommodation is the same as for Saturday night.

Monday 20th September – For those who have more time, we’ll visit any destinations missed on Saturday or meet the interests of participants, for example bushwalks and other related activities.
